Virginia Housing hosting Faith-Based Housing regional listening sessions

Tuesday, August 11, 2026/Categories: News Board

Virginia Housing is hosting regional listening sessions to discuss the recently enacted HB1279 and SB388, known as the "Faith in Housing Act.” The new law will go into effect January 2027 and will allow nonprofit religious organizations and certain tax-exempt nonprofits to develop affordable housing on their land without having to go through local rezoning processes. In these cases, localities will not be able to require a special exception, special use permit, conditional use permit, or other discretionary review or approval as a precondition to development.

The listening sessions are intended to provide stakeholders the opportunity to discuss the upcoming change and share what they need to move forward effectively. The following links will allow you to sign up for the session in your region:

  • Monday, Aug. 17: Roanoke (Register here)
  • Monday, Aug. 24: Northern Virginia (Register here)
  • Wednesday, Aug. 26: Hampton Roads (Register here)
