Consider Serving on the VML Executive Committee!
The Virginia Municipal League is governed by a 13-member Executive Committee made up of local officials from across the Commonwealth. The Executive Committee meets four times a year (once at the VML Annual Conference, once during VML Day at the Capitol, once in May, and once in August). VML pays all travel expenses for the May and August meetings. It is expected that the locality pays for VML Day and the VML Annual Conference as usual.
There are three ways to serve on the Executive Committee. First, you may choose to seek a position as a section chair. These Section Meeting (for Urban, Cities, and Towns) happen during the VML Annual Conference. Nominations are made from the floor and a Chair and Vice-Chair are chosen by the membership at each section meeting. The section chairs serve on the VML Executive Committee. This year’s section meetings will be held at the Conference in Virginia Beach on Monday, October 10 from 1:15 – 2:30 pm.
You may also seek an “at-large” position on the VML Executive Committee. Each year, the Nominating Committee as appointed by the VML President, considers candidates to fill the at-large seats. Two seats come up for election each year, and generally there is an at-large position to fill if that individual moves into the officer track.
Finally, the Nominations Committee also selects a Vice President and a President Elect for the organization. These generally come from individuals that have already served on the Executive Committee, but anyone may apply. By virtue of the VML Constitution, the President Elect automatically moves into the President position.
Should you wish to apply for an at-large position or an officer position, simply fill out the VML Executive Committee Application Form and email the completed form (and resume if you so choose) to firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also send it to the Nominations Committee Chair, David Helms at 821 Middle Ave., Marion, VA 24354.
