This position is available IMMEDIATELY in the Community Development and Planning Department.
Under the general supervision of the Zoning Administrator, this position is responsible for enforcement work in securing and maintaining compliance with the City’s Zoning Ordinance. Work involves inspection of buildings, structures, properties and uses to ensure conformance with existing requirements pertaining to the construction, alteration, maintenance and use of property. Gives detailed explanation to property owners and business owners/operators associated with violations and identifies options for resolving violations. Issues written notices of violation and civil penalty tickets/summons, maintains up-to-date case files, prepares evidence, and testifies in court on violations of the Zoning Ordinance. Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to zoning research assignments, preparation of activity reports, and gives presentations to civic and homeowners associations to proactively prevent zoning violations.
Graduation from high school and three or more years of actual zoning enforcement, law enforcement or other code enforcement work; or an Associate’s degree and one or more years of zoning enforcement, law enforcement or other code enforcement work; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the desired and necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of the laws relating to zoning and the methods and techniques of zoning enforcement is essential. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and engineering drawings. Ability to communicate patiently, effectively, and tactfully. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access and online mapping software. Must complete certification course by the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials within one year of employment and be willing to obtain certification in community noise enforcement. A valid driver’s license with good driving record is required. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Periodic early morning, evening and weekend hours required.
