WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

Job Description:

The Water Treatment Plant Operator plays a vital role ensuring that quality water is being received by the City of Newport News! There are multiple levels of this position depending on experience: Water Treatment Operator Trainee, 3rd Class, 2nd Class, and 1st Class, with room for advancement throughout your career!

As a Water Treatment Plant Operator in the Waterworks Department, you will be located at one of the Newport News Water Treatment Plants handling the day-to-day functions of the plant to include testing, data collection, maintenance, and even some repairs! On a daily basis, you would be performing a variety of water quality and chemistry tests to ensure quality of the water and ensure demands are being met. Record keeping of operational and laboratory data is essential for this position! Depending on the level of Operator, you would also have the opportunity to assume some supervisory responsibilities.

There are multiple levels of Water Treatment Plant Operator, and qualifications vary depending on the level: Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee – Requires a high school diploma or GED. This position must obtain a Commonwealth of Virginia Class 3 Waterworks Operator’s License no later than attaining two years of experience at a Class 4, Class 3, Class 2 or Class 1 waterworks facility.
