Water Service Technician I
The purpose of this class within the organization is to take water samples and read meters. Walk or drive vehicles along established routes to take readings of meter dials. Connect and disconnect utility services at specific locations. Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action by servicing department. Accounts for water usage due to flushing. Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuations. Complete work orders. Fills pools with fire hydrants. Changes meter registers; fix leaky meter boxes; installs and removes water meters. Provides customer service to check for low water pressure and other common problems related to the water meter. Requires some experience in the installation and repair of small mechanical equipment. Preferred Qualifications: Class 5, or higher, Virginia Waterworks Operator’s License; Familiarity with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) rules and regulations pertaining to water sampling; and Familiarity with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) water sampling process.
