The Water Plant Operator Trainee is responsible for monitoring water plant processes, under close supervision, to provide safe, potable water to meet distribution demands.

Essential Job Functions
Monitors plant operations: Assists operators in reading and recording data from computer terminal, mechanical charts, and remote stations; monitors SCADA system pump stations and remote vaults; checks filter settings and plant operations; and assists operators in monitoring plant output pressure.
Maintains plant equipment: Performs general maintenance on water plant equipment; maintains cleanliness of equipment; and backwashes filters.
Assists with lab and quality control testing: Collects samples from contact basins; prepares and processes samples; checks pH, alkalinity, chlorine levels, fluoridation, monochloramines, ammonia, turbidity, manganese, iron, color, phosphate, and other lab tests to ensure proper plant function; assists operators with interpretation of results, operational factors, and mathematical calculations to determine lime feed rate changes required; and makes proper adjustments to equipment and chemicals.
Prepares paperwork and enters data into database, spreadsheets or other appropriate software program; maintains files.
Under close supervision, mixes chemicals necessary to water treatment (phosphate, potassium, permanganate, and polymer); and monitors chemical tank levels.
Minimum Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED
Possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license
