Utility System Technician Trainee

Job Description:

Career Development Program
The Town’s Utilities Maintenance Division offers a career development program. The purpose of this program is to recognize and compensate those individuals who have acquired additional or advanced work-related knowledge, skills and abilities during their career with the Town’s Utilities Department. This program provides a career development plan based on an employee’s performance, training and length of service.

What You’ll Be Doing
This position involves performing skilled maintenance, repair and improvements to the water distribution and wastewater collection systems for the Department of Utilities. Work involves participating in the detection and repair of water/sewer line leaks, and maintenance of other water/sewer system facilities grounds, and equipment. Work is subject to environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration and working in hazardous conditions, (such as confined spaces, ditches, and traffic areas). Employees may be assigned tasks of a higher level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement.

Minimum Qualifications: HS/GED; Minimum three (3)-months to one (1)-year of basic experience with utility construction system installation or maintenance or equivalent combined experience and education; possess valid driver’s license and safe driving record; ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire; ability to obtain VDOT Flagging Certification; CPR-First Aid Certification within 12 months of hire; ability to assist with emergencies on an “on-call” basis.
