Town Engineer – Wastewater F/T
The Engineering & GIS Department is seeking an innovative, enthusiastic, collaborative, team-member for the position of Town Engineer. This position will provide general civil and environmental engineering services for Town facilities and infrastructure with a focus on wastewater management projects and systems. This position will develop and administer programs and projects which address wastewater management from perspectives of capacity, condition, reliability, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. Work will include management of the collection system, pump stations, and interface with the Blacksburg VPI Sanitation Authority which operates the wastewater treatment plant. Duties will include project management, design, development plan review, contract administration, and presentations to a variety of groups including homeowners, development industry, and engineering groups. This position will work with state and federal regulatory agencies to assure Town compliance with regulations and Town environmental stewardship priorities.
This position requires general understanding of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering with expertise in hydraulics, modeling, and system management practices. Qualified applicants must have the ability to interpret and prepare construction drawings and specifications, as well as the ability to use software for engineering modeling, word processing, database, GIS, AutoCAD, and spreadsheet applications. Experience with SewerGEMS modeling software is desirable. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing with others of varying technical expertise and with large groups and to mediate and achieve consensus is a requirement.
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, and two years of progressively responsible experience in the practical engineering field, including wastewater system design or regulation is required. Registration as an EIT in Virginia or the ability to obtain within six months, and registration as a PE in Virginia or the ability to obtain within one year are required for this position. Certification from the Department of Environmental Quality as an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan Reviewer is desirable. A valid Virginia driver’s license with an excellent driving record is required. A satisfactory post offer pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.
