SENIOR TAX COMPLIANCE OFFICER
The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking an analytical, research-oriented, and organized individual to join the Compliance Division as a Senior Tax Compliance Officer. The successful candidate will operate independently at a fully proficient to advanced level to encourage taxpayers to comply with the proper filing of business license taxes, business tangible personal property, and local excise taxes. The position requires the use of discovery methods including, but not limited to, visits to commercial locations and construction sites in the County to ensure that all businesses are on the County’s tax rolls. Candidate will utilize customer service skills while interacting with business owners, or their representatives, to obtain information, counsel on proper filing procedures, and ensure that business owners understand local tax obligations. In addition to field visits, the position also requires the use of investigative and analytical skills to utilize data obtained from a variety of sources to discover unregistered businesses.The individual will research, interpret, and apply Virginia tax code, case law, and local ordinances to ensure that businesses are assessed fairly, equitably, and uniformly. This position should be proficient in placing account recommendations for review. Position requires interaction with office management and the Treasurer’s Office, as collections, bankruptcy, and tax appeal issues dictate.
The candidate will also mentor newly hired compliance officers, as needed, to ensure that they are properly trained. Additionally, while not supervisory, the candidate should be able to lead by example and provide encouragement and assistance to fellow Compliance Officers. Must be willing to attend business taxation classes to remain familiar with current assessment issues and laws.
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Finance, or a related field and two (2) years of related work experience with automated systems and customer service preferably in taxation or finance.
The candidate must have exceptional writing, analytical, and communication skills to interact with business owners and their accountants and attorneys; familiarity with business structures and Federal and Virginia business income taxes. Must be self-motivated, able to multitask, and able to independently exercise sound professional judgment; be proficient in Microsoft Office apps.
