Ranger Aide – Part Time

Job Description:

What would a typical day on the job be like — what work would I do?
Do you enjoy providing excellent customer service and sharing your passion for the outdoors? Well, this may be the perfect opportunity for you!

The Ranger Aide is responsible for performing technical park management, resource conservation work, and assisting the team with general park operations! Day to day will typically vary in this position, but you could be doing anything from administrative work, to providing customer service, patrolling to assisting with wildlife!

This position has frequent interaction and communication with citizens and other employees in the Parks and Recreation department, so customer service skills will come in handy!
Ranger Aide’s also operate the cash register to sell concessions or collect various rental fees for the recreational equipment. Did you know that Newport News Parks rents recreational equipment like boats, canoes, and bicycles? Visitors might also call into the Campground to reserve a campsite. It is your job to answer the telephone, collect applicable information, schedule the reservation, and collect payment. Safety is a top priority for the park, so it will be your job to make sure rules and regulations are enforced!

The Ranger Aide’s also assist with community and conservation efforts. There may be days when you assist with interpretive nature walks and talks, and other days where you assist in the care and rehabilitation of park wildlife! This is an exciting opportunity with a wide range of responsibilities that will keep each day new and exciting! Come join our team!

What are the qualifications for this position?
This position requires a high school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. College level education in a related field such as wildlife management, natural sciences, forestry, or leisure services is preferred.

An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and sex offender registry check and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. A pre-employment medical evaluation will also be required prior to employment.
