Job Description:
The Woodstock Police Department strives to protect persons and property by providing necessary law enforcement services, while promoting community involvement, stability, and order through service, assistance, and visibility. The Police Department desires to build collaborative community relationships and to ensure comprehensive and responsive community-oriented policing initiatives. The Police Department recently achieved reaccreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC), which provides assurance that police functions are conducted consistently, transparently, and to the highest standards.
The police officer position is responsible for maintaining the safety and good order of the community by enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ordinances of the Town of Woodstock. Duties include patrolling assigned areas of Town, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, directing traffic, checking residential and commercial properties for security, participating in community-oriented policing projects and crime prevention activities, investigating criminal activity, serving warrants, providing court testimony, preparing reports, and attending periodic training sessions. This position works under the supervision of the police sergeant and police corporal.
Candidates should possess the ability to deal effectively with juveniles and adults; ability to analyze evidence, ability to question and interview skillfully; ability to organize and prepare clear and concise oral and written reports; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, school officials, students, parents, and the public.
Candidate must be a U.S. citizen and a minimum of 21 years of age, possess a valid Virginia driver’s license, and possess a high school diploma or GED (college preferred). A current Virginia DCJS certification is preferred but not required. A complete criminal background investigation will be completed on the selected candidate, along with a full medical exam to determine physical aptitude for the position. The selected candidate must also pass a pre-employment, post-offer drug screening.
