Planning & Inspections Director
THE TOWN OF MOREHEAD CITY, located on the beautiful Crystal Coast in eastern North Carolina, is currently seeking an energetic, self-motivated, and detailed oriented candidate for the position of PLANNING & INSPECTIONS DIRECTOR. Morehead City is the largest incorporated town in Carteret County with a permanent population of over 9,000 residents and encompassing over sixteen (16) square miles of land area (10 square miles = corporate limits; 6 square miles = EJT). While tourism remains a major industry in Morehead City, other industries and services including, but not limited to, the NC Port of Morehead City, the Center for Marine Sciences & Technology (CMAST) at NCSU, the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) at UNC-Chapel Hill, Carteret Health Care Medical Center general medicine and surgical hospital facility, home of the NC Seafood Festival, retail shopping and restaurants, and a vital downtown area. This position, under general direction of the City Manager, will provide professional and administrative work to include planning, directing and developing planning activities, services and programs; coordinating and supervising building, environmental and zoning codes enforcement; enforcement of FEMA’s floodplain regulations; management of NC Coastal Area Management’s (CAMA) local permitting program, transportation and subdivision development.
This position is responsible for managing and supervising a staff of eight (8) full-time employees in addition to providing staff support to the City Council and various Boards and Commissions. A departmental budget of $736,000 will be under the direction and management of this position. QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree with coursework in planning or related field. Significant professional experience in public sector planning and community development. Considerable supervisory and administrative experience over staff. Comprehensive knowledge of the advanced principles of planning, code enforcement, community development and economics, municipal finance and sociology as they apply to City planning. General knowledge of GIS. Possession of AICP preferred. Possession of a valid, unrestricted NC Driver’s License required. Background/drug testings required.
