OPERATOR-IN-TRAINING, WATER TREATMENT FACILITIES

Job Description:

The Operator-in-Training will assist in ensuring the facility is operational and meets permit requirements by performing routine operational tasks including skilled and technical work on water treatment plant equipment and facilities alongside the Plant Operator and under direct supervision of a Class I licensed Shift Supervisor. The Operator-in-Training will perform duties including sampling and laboratory analyses, data analysis, monitoring and controlling treatment operations, and data entry. The Operator-in-Training will be expected to utilize current industry technologies including systems such as laboratory instrumentation, SCADA process control and data management software. The facility utilizes advanced treatment technology and is subject to stringent standards and state/federal regulations. All candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively to coworkers and supervisors.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED with strong math skills and the ability to use logic to solve problems. Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a science field. All candidates must be eligible and able to obtain a minimum of a VA Waterworks Operator Class 3 license within 3 years of hiring. Candidates with current VA Waterworks licenses of all classes are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license.

The Water Treatment Facility is a 24/7/365 facility utilizing a 12-hour shift schedule. Operators are essential personnel and are required to work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays; a sample schedule will be provided to candidates. Candidates will be expected to cover periodically for coworkers out on leave. Although most of the work is performed indoors, intermittent outside work in all weather conditions will be required.

Special Requirements: If selected for employment all new hires must be willing to get vaccinated or provide proof of vaccination for Covid-19 prior to their start date.
