Non-Certified Emergency Communications Officer I/II/III/IV
Job Description:
Responsibilities:
• Accurately obtains, records and disseminates emergency and non-emergency calls for service from citizens and visitors to Police/Fire/EMS responders.
• Reviews emergency call information; determines nature of call; dispatches call to the most appropriate and closest unit or person to the scene of the emergency; relays all pertinent information to responding units; stays in constant contact to relay additional information and respond to requests.
• Operates radios, computer networks, multi-lined telephone systems and related equipment.
• Enters wanted/missing persons and/or stolen property into the State and National wanted system.
• Monitors and responds to the Surry Nuclear Power Plant and activates alarms when necessary; monitors the National Weather Alert System; contacts Virginia Department Transportation (VDOT) as necessary.
• (Emergency Communications Officer II/III) Assists in training new employees.
• (Emergency Communications Officer IV) Acts as supervisor in the Emergency Communications Supervisor’s absence
Requirements:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma; some related education and work experience preferred.
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to input data via a computerized network at a reasonable rate of speed as determined by the department.
• Ability to make quick decisions while maintaining composure; deal effectively with staff, the public and other agencies often in emergency situations; communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing; speak distinctly, clearly, and concisely; hear and understand radio and telephone transmissions and respond appropriately; understand and follow directions.
