NATURAL RESOURCES INTERN
Job Description:
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity over the summer to jumpstart your Arboricultural or Forestry career? This internship will be packed full of hands-on immersion to learn, develop, and jumpstart your career! As a Forest Technician Intern, you will work in our Waterworks Department in the Asset Sustainability Division. You will be participating specifically in the field of Forestry and Forestry Technology and be working right alongside our team to assist them with ongoing projects for the City of Newport News.
Day to day, you will be out in the field, in all weather conditions and different terrain within the City. We will provide a foundation training on tree identification, planting techniques, and basic tree maintenance practices. You will perform proper timber cruising and marking while measuring and take accurate notes of the plot. You will also need to collect the stand data for timber and add descriptions, which will then be input into our data system.
The starting rate of pay for this internship will be $15 per hour or higher depending on your course completion, previous work history, and other qualifications. You will work about 40 hours per week Monday-Friday between the hours of 6:00am-2:30pm. This internship will run from May 2023 until August 2023. There could also be potential for a part-time opportunity, or a full-time job offer at the end of the program if the City has a vacancy at that time.
The Asset Sustainability Division would like an intern to assist with the following objectives over the summer: • Develop a method to streamline the collection of forestry and forest management related data (residuals vegetation monitoring, stand descriptions, etc.) • Research and leverage UAV/drone technology/software to aid in the remote gathering of forest data (tree counts, species differentiation, etc.) • GPS map extent of invasive plant species on watershed properties. Students currently enrolled in a Forestry, Forest Technology or science related degree program would see the most value out of this internship! Courses completed in Dendrology and forest mensuration will give you a great foundation for the summer! Rising juniors and seniors will be top candidates for this opportunity, as your courses studied should provide you with a solid foundation for this program!
