Meter Technician II

Job Description:

The Meter Technician II is responsible for performing daily service work involving connection and disconnection of energized meter services. This position serves as lead worker for Meter Technician I role and backup for Meter Services Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions:

Receives daily service orders regarding connection and disconnection of energized electric and water meters; carries out disconnection of services in the field as well as bulk disconnects in the office utilizing Yukon with the under glass disconnects of electrical services due to non-payment of utility services; and completes service orders in assigned computer system.

Installs electric meters for new installation of service; performs voltage tests before energizing service to ensure safety of service and meet all City and State guidelines and requirements; and installs water meters for new services. Identifies and takes appropriate action in emergency situations to protect safety of personnel, property, and general public.

Investigates, documents, and reports current diversion and other unsafe meter conditions and abnormal or hazardous system conditions observed in the field to supervisor.

Performs electric checks on electric service while energized, using appropriate personal protective equipment provided to determine compliance with electrical standards for voltage and current for size of service provided.

Inspects electrical and water services for any irregularities and damaged equipment; repairs and replaces as needed and reports to supervisor.

Refers to customer account information, electric voltage, policy and procedure manuals, equipment manuals, safety manuals, maps, technical drawings, codes/ laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.

Minimum Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED
Vocational/Technical certification in related field
Two years’ experience in meter reading/maintenance and/or general electrical service and repair work

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for this position may be considered.

Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license.
