Maintenance Worker – Beautification

Job Description:

Unleash your potential with the City of Manassas! The City of Manassas Beautification Division is looking for a dedicated and energetic individual who enjoys working outdoors. This position is responsible for maintaining trees and shrubs, applying fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, pruning and mulching, and other tasks as required. The starting rate for this position is $17.93 per hour.

This is a full-time, benefited position that offers Virginia Retirement System benefits, 13 paid holidays, generous annual and sick leave, health insurance, employee assistance program, deferred compensation, access to the Prince William County Employees Credit Union, and several exciting work perks! Essential Job Functions
Performs tasks related to landscaping and beautification of City: designs flower beds and selects plants; plants flowers, trees, and shrubs; maintains landscaping and flower beds by fertilizing, watering, weeding, mulching, clearing debris; prunes shrubs, trees, and plants; mulches and edges flower and shrub beds; and maintains hanging baskets and planting boxes.

Applies chemical pesticides and fertilizers as appropriate: mixes and prepares proper pre-emergent chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides for treatment of landscapes; sprays flowers, shrubs, and trees for insects and diseases as needed to control pests and infections to plants.

Cares for trees on City property: performs proper pruning and trimming techniques; removes dead trees, limbs, storm damage and sidewalk overgrowth; maintains an inventory of trees on public property; stakes new plantings and monitors tree growth.

Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition.

Minimum Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED is required. Knowledge of the principles and practices of horticulture and arboriculture including, safe application of pesticides, and the basic principles of landscaping preferred.

Special Requirements
Must have or be able to obtain a Virginia Class B CDL and a Pesticide Applicator Certification within five months of hire
