Job Description:
What would a typical day on the job be like — what work would I do?
Do you have a passion for swimming and want to monitor the safety of others while in an aquatic or beach environment? This may be the perfect opportunity for you!
As a lifeguard, it is your duty to monitor the activity and safety of patrons at various pools and beach locations throughout the City of Newport News! You will receive training on CPR and First Aid procedures so you can administer if needed. You will also enforce pool safety standards and operational facility rules for all individuals utilizing the aquatic and beach facilities.
This position has frequent interaction and communication with citizens and other employees in the Parks and Recreation department, so customer service skills will come in handy!
What will I learn on the job?
In the position as a lifeguard, you will continue to learn as you progress in your position. You will continue to gain knowledge in aquatics, including safety principles and practices. You will also have the opportunity to interact with other employees in different positions and departments, allowing you to gain knowledge of the City and other processes!
What are the qualifications for this position?
This position requires a satisfactory results from a pre-employment medical evaluation and substance abuse testing, and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history and sex offender registry check prior to employment will also be required.
To qualify for this position, you would need to obtain the following certifications from the American Red Cross or equivalent agency: First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguarding. There is no required experience or education needed for this position, but previous lifeguard experience is preferred.
Is there room for advancement?
There is room for advancement as a lifeguard and within the Parks & Recreation department!
You could have the opportunity to become a lead lifeguard. After three (3) seasons of experience with one (1) season of lead or supervisory experience, you would be eligible to become a lead lifeguard. With this position, you will receive higher pay and more responsibility!
