Library Systems Programmer
Under the direction of the Technology Services Manager, the Library Systems Programmer will be the primary application administrator for VBPL’s main Integrated Library System (ILS), which is the database that integrates circulation, catalog of materials, acquisitions functions, customer accounts, system reports, and data related activities; provides support for system maintenance, downtime, and issues.
Responsibilities include analyze, design, code, test and maintain complex application programs and computerized information systems to complete assigned projects; and apply a variety of acceptable programming languages, report generators, application generators, and high-level interpreters to complete assigned tasks.
Document all programming functions according to departmental standards.
Conduct annual write off of ILS records in accordance with retention records standards and City Council approval.
Supervision of Technology Services paraprofessional team members.
Provide backup support of secondary ILS systems for Special Services and Joint Use Library interface.
Read and conform to departmental standards to ensure uniform and structured programming; and utilize technical reference material as needed to complete assigned projects.
Help to establish and adhere to set deadlines for schedules as necessary to complete the systems tasks.
Assign programming tasks to Technology Services paraprofessional staff to ensure the timely and accurate completion of these tasks.
Work on problem notices to achieve a satisfactory resolution of the problem. May function as a team leader as directed for a specific project.
Provide both formal and informal training sessions to junior staff to develop in house technical proficiency.
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
Assist staff and customers with issues related to the ILS and peripheral hard and software applications.
Run and sustain reporting systems; perform system upgrades and track updates on latest enhancements to software.
Perform systems modifications to include analysis, design, development/coding, testing, implementation, and documentation.
