EQUIPMENT OPERATOR SPECIALIST- WATERWORKS
Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing specialized work while operating a variety of Class II and Class III heavy equipment. Serves as a lead worker. Reports to a Crew Supervisor C or Utility Crew Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Operates equipment such as a backhoe, excavator, milling machine, front end loader and boring machine to install, repair and perform maintenance on the water distribution system. Performs a variety of heavy manual labor utilizing jackhammers, pipe saw, concrete saw, portable air compressor, portable light plant, and portable arrow board; maintains the material inventory on the line truck. Operates a tandem dump truck and trailer as well as a road tractor and lowboy to transport equipment, materials and supplies. Assists with flushing, testing, chlorination and sampling of pipeline after work has been completed. Ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities; sets out traffic cones and signs according the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); flags traffic as needed. Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires 5-7 years of work experience in the operation of Class II and Class III equipment and 1-2 years’ experience as a lead worker or supervisor, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduation from a recognized motor equipment operator apprenticeship program may substitute for up to one year of experience.
