Virginia Beach, (population 450,000) is a AAA rated, independent City established in 1963 by the merger of Princess Anne County and the City of Virginia Beach. It is the largest city in Virginia and has a land area of 307 square miles, 59 of which is water surface. It is also the safest metropolitan city in the country (cities over 300,000 in population). The City is proud to be the home of NAS Oceana Naval Jet Base, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek/Fort Story (joint army/navy) and Camp Pendleton (state military base for National Guard training). The strong presences of the defense industry help to insulate the City of Virginia Beach from economic downturns.
Preferred Candidate qualifications:
• A Master’s degree in public administration, business administration, engineering or related field. A designation as a Project Management Professional is preferred.
• Ten years increasingly responsible executive level experience preferably leading a large, complex local government public works operation.
• Extensive knowledge of budgeting and finance, preferably in the municipal sector with the ability to identify areas for efficiency and collaboration, including a strong knowledge of capital project planning and alternative delivery.
• Excellent at communicating effectively both orally and in writing, with the ability to listen as well as explain information and related plans and programs to policy makers and the public that is easily understood by all stakeholders.
The starting salary range is up to a maximum of $169,374 DOQ. Residency in the City of Virginia Beach is preferred. The City offers a competitive benefit package.
