Director of Planning
The Planning Director works under the direction of the County Administration performing complex professional and administrative work in directing the activities of the Department of Planning. Supervision is exercised over all Planning personnel which includes the Administrative Assistant, Zoning Administrator, Principal Planner, and Planner/Senior Planner. Interpersonal contacts are within and outside the organization, requiring a high degree of diplomacy in order to attain objectives. Problems encountered are difficult to complex, requiring the ability to modify policies or devise new procedures to solve problems. The Director is frequently required to make decisions that have a moderate impact on the County. The work environment is primarily indoors where no hazardous conditions are prevalent; however, outdoor activities, inspections, and off-site meetings are frequent. It is estimated that approximately thirty (30%) of the Planning Director’s time will be devoted to supporting local and regional transportation boards and committees, and developing annual work programs utilizing local and regional/state transportation funding, therefore this position is partially funded by local revenues received from the Central Virginia Transportation Authority (CVTA).
