If you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference as a key member of the City Manager’s Executive Leadership Team providing strategic leadership; serving as a spokesperson for the City of Suffolk with responsibility for planning, directing, managing, and supervising the day-to-day operations of our Media & Community Relations Department, look no further!
Under the administrative direction of the Deputy City Manager, the Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership for media and public relations and external and internal communications for the City of Suffolk and serves as a spokesperson for the City. Work involves consulting with members of the City Council, the City Manager, and the City Manager’s staff to develop media and public relations strategies and policies. Handles sensitive media issues for the City. Directs and oversees all external and internal publications, including information on the Municipal Cable Channel and City’s website. Works with the City Manager and City Council in developing the overall goals and objectives of the City of Suffolk and communicates them to constituents and to employees. Requires excellent writing skills, including press releases and speeches.
Our ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or a closely related field, and 6-9 years of progressively responsible experience including supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Designation of Accredited in Public relations (APR) preferred.
