Job Description:
The City of Alexandria, Virginia, Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS), seeks a highly
motivated, innovative, and visionary individual for the position of Deputy Director. The ideal candidate
will demonstrate an active knowledge of human services delivery systems and a proven track record of
building and supporting a culture that is trauma-informed, collaborative, and transparent and data
driven. The ideal candidate will also be a strategic thinker, creative problem solver, trust builder and
accountable decision maker with an ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a
diverse group of staff, community partners and stakeholders.
Reporting to the Department Director, the Deputy Director position is a member of the Leadership
Team. The incumbent in this position will assist with improving the overall effectiveness of DCHS’
program operations and service delivery. The position’s focal areas include short- and long-term
planning, program evaluation, data management and analysis, grant making and grant seeking,
program development, performance measurement, organizational analysis, management systems
design and implementation, quality assurance and compliance. The incumbent in this position will also
provide both technical and program operational support to the department’s Leadership Team and to
various management staff teams, and community partners. Additionally, management and oversight
of all aspects of the Department’s human services grant fund is part of this position’s responsibilities.
