County Attorney

Job Description:

We are currently seeking a County Attorney to serve as chief legal advisor to Surry County government in all matters affecting the legal interests of the County! Duties will include but not limited to:

Providing legal representation to the Board of Supervisors, County officials, and departments;

Performing complex legal research, providing routine legal counsel and guidance, and preparing written and oral opinions on various legal issues for the Board of Supervisors, County departments, and various County boards and commissions;

Conducting complex litigation and negotiating settlements on behalf of the County;

Overseeing investigations of litigated claims and complaints against the County and recommending appropriate action;

Overseeing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and monitoring responses for legal and other requirements; providing legal advice and assistance regarding laws, regulations, and agency procedures on FOIA;

Reviewing proposed and passed legislation from sessions of the General Assembly; identifying legislation’s impact and providing guidance on compliance;

Drafting and/or reviewing County ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases, and policies;

Providing suggestions and advice on strategy and procedural concerns;

Formulating, advocating, and disseminating the legal goals and policies of the County, ensuring consistency with deferral and state laws;

Adhering to a customer service philosophy, and demonstrating skill in establishing a strong and positive image of the County;

Attending meetings of the County to include Board of Supervisor, Planning Commission, Economic Development Authority, and other County Boards as needed; and

Performing other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM WORK:
Juris Doctorate;
Ten years of progressively responsible related experience including some supervisory experience;
Possession of a license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia or the ability to obtain license within 6 months of hire;
Considerable working knowledge of employment law preferred.
