County Administrator – Bath County, VA
Job Description:
Bath County, Virginia (2020 pop. 4,248) is a historic community located in the heart of the beautiful Allegheny Mountains located along the western, central border of West Virginia across 540 square miles.
The County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, elected for four-year terms, whose members are residents of their designated magisterial district. The County Administrator is appointed by the Board, carrying out the Board’s adopted policies, directing business procedures, and overseeing day-to-day operations of all County departments. The County operates with an approved FY 2022 budget of $18 million and 52 full-time Employees. The FY 2023 budget is scheduled to be adopted on June 14, 2022.
The County Administrator serves as the chief advisor to the Board and conducts County business in accordance with Board policy. Duties include executing all policies established by the Board or mandated by the state and administering the budget. As the County Administrator, they will oversee the daily operations of the County, supervise the work of staff, and prepare the annual budget for approval by the Board of Supervisors. The County Administrator ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws and ordinances as well as maintains open communication with various partners such as the business community, area governments, and county residents.
This position requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with major work in public administration or a related field such as business administration, city/county management, planning, political science or personnel administration, with a master’s degree in a similar academic area preferred. Candidates should possess experience in a comparably sized community or organization (Virginia experience is a plus) with a wide range of knowledge in operations and management.
The salary range for the County Administrator position is $100,000 – $120,000, and will depend on the qualifications. Benefits include participation in the Virginia Retirement System, vacation, administrative, holiday and sick leave, group life insurance, and Medical, dental, and vision insurance. County residency is required within a reasonable time of appointment. Up to $10,000 will be reimbursed in relocation expenses.
