Code Inspector I
The City of Virginia Beach Planning Dept. is seeking to fill a Building Code Inspector I that will do inspection of residential and commercial new building construction, including repairs, alterations, additions, and /or renovations in compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC); review of Building Plans and Physical Surveys for code compliance; investigate related complaints; answer code questions for contractors, homeowners and citizens by phone and/or in person; prepare reports as needed; enter inspection results on laptop computer through Accela automated permitting system; attend Court/meetings related to construction/permit matters and issue summons.
Requires high school or GED, plus 4 years experience in fields that provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as commercial and residential construction and associated with such positions as carpenter or builder; or any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
Preferences: Experience in construction and building code compliance. Possess International Code Council (ICC) Residential Certification and Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Erosion and Sedimentation (E&S) Certification. Diversity of ICC/DHCD Certifications (more than one). Strong customer service skills.
