Code Inspector I/II
Enforce building maintenance and property maintenance codes, and other regulations or ordinances, in assigned areas of the city for the Code Enforcement Division of the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation. Perform daily inspections in the ﬁeld; issue notices of violations; explain regulations to the public; issue summonses and testify in court; access dwellings, commercial buildings, and undeveloped properties that may be diﬃcult to access; and perform in accordance with the organization’s values and core strategies. Drive a city vehicle.
Preferences: State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector; experience enforcing property maintenance, building, or fire codes; experience performing field inspections for Code Compliance; experience talking to members of the public, explaining regulations and resolving conflicts; experience using inspections or other records management database.
State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector must be obtained within 18 months from date of employment in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards.
This position may be ﬁlled as either a Code Inspector I or Code Inspector II based on the qualiﬁcations of the selected applicant. State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector and attendance at the required state training modules are required to start at the Code Inspector II level position. The associated pay grades and starting salaries are as follows:
