• Chesapeake is governed by the Council Manager form of government. The City Manager is appointed by the Mayor and an eight member City Council. The Mayor and City Council also appoint the City Attorney, City Clerk, City Auditor and City Assessor. The City Manager is responsible for the appointment of all department heads and the development and administration of the $1.1 billion annual budget of which approximately one half is the school budget. Chesapeake is a full service City with approximately 3500 full time employees.
• Chesapeake is embarking on its comprehensive planning process later this year. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in public policy, planning, business administration or related field. Candidates are expected to have master’s degree in public administration or business administration or related field along with ten years increasingly responsible executive level experience preferably in leading large, complex local government operations. A combination of experience and education may be substituted for a master’s degree.
