The City of Lynchburg is seeking applications for the position of City Attorney. The City Attorney is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the City Council, and provides legal services to City Council, the City Manager, City departments and agencies as well as the Lynchburg School Board, and a variety of Council-appointed boards and commissions. Legal services include rendering formal and informal opinions; recommending appropriate legal changes in the City Code, regulations and policies; advising of changes in law which affect the City; drafting ordinances, resolutions, Charter revisions, proposed legislation, contracts, deeds, leases and other legal documents; handling real estate matters, including necessary title examinations, negotiations and closings; prosecuting and defending lawsuits on behalf of the City; and, supervises the staff in the City Attorney’s Office as well as the City’s Risk Management activities and Self-Insurance Plan.
Candidates applying for the position should possess excellent communication skills and be able to deal effectively with public officials and the general public. The minimum qualifications include a Juris Doctor in law from an American Bar Association approved law school, at least ten years of experience in the practice of law, with a minimum of five years of experience as counsel to a local government in Virginia. Applicants must also be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar and licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Residency within the City is required within a negotiated period of time.
The salary range for the position is $130,894.40 to $218,171.20 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
