Job Description:
Portsmouth, VA (pop. 96,000) The City of Portsmouth desires an experienced City Assessor skilled in complex professional and administrative work in planning, organizing, evaluating and directing the appraisal, assessment and annual reassessment of real property. The City Assessor determines the fair market value and equalization of assessable real estate taxable and non-taxable; administers programs related to real property taxation. Like many municipalities, Portsmouth faces both major challenges and exciting opportunities, and the City is seeking a motivated individual with significant experience in real estate assessment and appraisal to join the team. The ninth most populous city in the state, Portsmouth is situated along the Elizabeth River in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. It is home to the nation’s oldest shipyard and numerous other military, federal, health, and transportation-related employers and assets.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or related field and at least 5 – 7 years of experience in the assessment and appraisal field. Designation from the International Association of Assessing Officers or equivalent required and Commonwealth of Virginia Real Estate Appraisal license required.
Starting salary $109,000 – $120,000 +/- DOQ.
Residency in the City of Portsmouth is required within 6 months of employment.
