Building Inspector I

Job Description:

Sign on bonus of $2,500 for the selected candidate!

We are currently seeking a Building Inspector I to perform technical work inspecting and performing plan review for residential, commercial, and multi-family structures for compliance with all applicable building codes. This classification is part of a career development ladder.
Duties include but not limited to:
• Performing field inspections and re-inspections of buildings and facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes;
• Receiving complaints in regard to defective construction and handles enforcement problems;
• Reviewing and filing engineering letters and details, surveys, and correspondence;
• Inspecting for unpermitted work; follows-up to ensure compliance; writes notices of violation when non-permitted work is evident;
• Issuing warnings and notices of violations as appropriate;
• Coordinating inspections with other agencies, inspectors, or departments (Utilities, Zoning, Health Department, Virginia Department of Transportation, etc.);
• Answering questions from citizens, contractors, sub-contractors, and builders on code matters;
• Testifying in court on code violation cases;
• Preparing reports, and keeping records regarding inspections;
• Participating in emergency response operations as required in a declared emergency by Board officials; and
• Performing other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM WORK:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Three (3) years of experience in building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes enforcement and inspections work
• Or equivalent training, education, and experience
• Possession of state certification in building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and residential inspections preferred. Must obtain first certification within 18 months of employment and other required certifications within three (3) years
• Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
