ASSISTANT PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
The Town of Culpeper’s Public Works Department is seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant Public Works Director.
Primary functions include: plan and supervise activities of street and storm drain maintenance, cemetery operations, park maintenance, solid waste collection, water distribution and sewer collection; assist with preparation of department budget and authorize expenditures; maintain a variety of records and files; prepare reports; make field inspections of project to ascertain status and provide instruction; supervise, direct, and evaluate department staff; and perform related tasks as required.
Skills & Qualifications: Candidate must have thorough knowledge of municipal street maintenance, solid waste collection, and related activities and services; thorough knowledge of the equipment and tools needed for an efficient and effective public works maintenance program; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions; ability to review and analyze plans and specifications for the construction of public facilities; ability to formulate safe operational policies and procedures; ability to maintain records and prepare technical reports; ability to supervise the work of a large staff; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, associates, contractors, and the general public.
Education & Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in construction management, civil or environmental engineering, or a related field and considerable experience in public works maintenance, including supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Possession of an appropriate CDL valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of VDOT Work Zone Safety certification
