Assistant Director of Planning
The City of Newport News, Virginia, has an exciting opening for a new Assistant Director of Planning. The Assistant Director will oversee the necessary leadership and assist the Director with strategic direction of the Department of Planning’s Comprehensive Planning division. The Assistant Director is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the City’s Comprehensive Plan, neighborhood and transportation planning, and grants. The position will also be responsible for the effective supervision and administration of the division including selection, training, performance management, prioritizing and assigning work and related activities over the department. Communication skills will be an essential piece of this position, as the Assistant Director communicates with employees, department heads, City Management, and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission. Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Urban Design, Architecture or a related field and 5-7 years of professional planning experience, with 3-5 years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s Degree in Planning or a related field is not required, but preferred.
An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, credit check, sex offender registry, and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record will be required.
Salary and Benefits: Salary ranges are competitive based on qualifications and experience. This position has a target salary range of $71,706- $123,525 annually.
