Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation
The Assistant Director for Parks and Recreation will be responsible for Parks and Recreations Grounds and Facilities Maintenance, Golf Course Maintenance, Custodial Services, Risk and Safety Services and the Capital Improvement Program. The Assistant Director will bring experience in operations management, planning and implementing capital improvement projects, maintenance management and an understanding of the future of parks and grounds maintenance. This position will oversee infrastructure maintenance and repair functions, including but not limited to recreation facilities, parks, trails, maintenance facilities and playgrounds. This executive will oversee areas where contractors, engineers, consultants and architects work closely with other City departments such as Pubic Works, Transportation, Planning and Economic Development, to meet the operational and strategic goals of the Department and City of Harrisonburg.
The Assistant Director will develop maintenance and grounds management programs as well as a formal asset management program that prioritizes facilities most at risk or that have the most critical needs. The formalized programs will enable the Department to make informed decisions about resource allocation and utilization in managing a full spectrum of assets, services and value-added resources such as staff, equipment, materials and other resources. The programs should offer the ability to analyze trends, make informed business decisions, strategically evaluate business needs and develop methodologies to implement needed changes. In addition, a formal ADA Transition Plan needs to be developed as well as ensuring adherence to OSHA standards.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation or a related field and considerable upper level management experience in a related field. A background in operations, maintenance and/or asset management is preferred. Parks and Recreation certification is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A valid driver’s license is required.
