Assistant/Deputy City Manager
The City Manager is looking for an energetic individual who is passionate about local government to serve as the Assistant City Manager to assist with the daily management of the City.
The responsibilities of this position includes supervising the operations of assigned departments. The individual in this position will have an opportunity to work on a variety of interesting and complex projects working with the City Council, department directors, City staff, and the community. The Deputy City Manager may also serve as the Acting City Manager in the absence of the City Manager. This position will be responsible for keeping abreast of changes in Federal, State and local law, and rules and regulations, we well as analyzing the impact of those changes. The position manages and directs City departments, public safety agencies and programs based on general direction and policy of the City Manager and City Council.
The position requires graduation from accredited four-year university with major coursework in management, business or public administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree in a related field is highly desirable. Extensive executive administrative experience of more than five years at the department head or higher top management level is desired, including experience and expertise in most facets of municipal management including budget administration, city planning, economic development, executive staff supervision, public transportation, public safety, and automated management information systems.
Directs and coordinates administration of city government in accordance with policies determined by City Council or other authorized elected officials and City Manager. Responsibilities entail accountability based on measurable cost effective results for the substance, efficiency, productivity and quality of activities performed within assigned areas.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provides leadership, management direction and supervises activities of the following departments: Technology, Fire/EMS, Police, Public Works, General Services, Human Resources, Civic Facilities (Civic Center) and Greater Roanoke Transit Company (Valley Metro Bus Services) with approximately 900 employees and budgets in excess of $100M.
Participates in the preparation of annual budget and expenditures and monitoring
