Assistant City Surveyor – Engineering
Assists with collecting and obtaining information for the accurate preparation of land plats, topographic base maps, hydrographic maps and other information used in determining property lines, construction base lines, city boundary limits, property ownership, etc.; establishes horizontal and vertical control for the city-wide networks used to support city plan metric base maps and engineering projects; directs and plans the preparation of plat, topographic and hydrographic surveys and photogrammetric based maps.
Performs preparatory work such as deed research, court record searches, utility location, data collection and reviews preliminary calculations and consults with engineers, contractors and developers before survey work is assigned.
Provides professional and technical support and/or advice to city agencies, professional consultants and private citizens regarding survey related issues; performs mathematical calculations for accurate adjustments on control surveys (horizontal and vertical) for both geodetic and plane positioning.
Reviews and approves subdivision plats, property acquisition plats, dispositioning and easement plats that are prepared by private agencies; maintains horizontal and vertical control network within the city; directs and performs research of property records for city projects; prepares reports relating to the status of property and right-of-ways.
Translates survey data for use in finished documents such as plats, deeds, maps or drawings; prepares legal description of property to be acquired or disposed of; prepares finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, corner records, and other reports; and calculates work time on projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering or a related field and 3-5 years of field surveying, mathematics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Must possess and maintain a current Professional Land Surveyor license from the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of employment.
