Assistant City Attorney or Deputy City Attorney

Job Description:

Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Position may be filled at an Assistant Attorney or a Deputy Attorney level, depending on demonstrated qualifications and experience commensurate with a higher level of responsibility. The preferred hiring amount is between $75,678.24 to $116,836.93 annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, exempt, position.

This position is responsible for providing professional legal services to City departments, boards and commissions on complex matters, and the ability to independently handle litigation in the City’s General District and Circuit Courts. Will have primary responsibility for one or more of the following: Freedom of Information Act (FOIA); Human Resources; Social Services; land use and zoning matters such as subdivision and site plan approval, enforcement of zoning, erosion & sediment control/stormwater laws, and preparation of deeds and covenants for easements and conveyances of land and affordable housing commitments, given to the City. Additional duties may include public procurement transactions, construction contractor and architectural/engineering contracts. May be required to attend meetings of the City’s planning commission and/or meetings of other boards or commissions, as necessary. Work is completed under the general supervisor of the City Attorney.

Qualifications:
– Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an ABA accredited law school.
– Must currently be licensed to practice law within the Commonwealth of Virginia, or eligible to be admitted to practice law under the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia Part 1A, Rule 1A:1.
– Preference for at least two years of prior experience as a practicing attorney (Considerable experience as a practicing attorney is required for an applicant to be considered for appointment at the deputy level).
