Assistant City Attorney
Job Description:
The purpose of this job within the organization is to assist the City Attorney in providing excellent legal representation for the City of Petersburg. This job works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.
Essential Functions:
Prepares, researches and drafts ordinances.
Responds to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests.
Selects houses for the spot-blighted program.
Attends abatement, code and enforcement (ACE) team meeting and inspections to ensure compliance.
Works with code compliance to enforce compliance with the building/fire code.
Prosecutes violators on behalf of the City.
Attends court and prosecutes individuals for code violations.
Prepares and/or reviews contracts, leases and Memorandums of Understanding.
Prepares resolutions, correspondence and supporting documents.
Researches and drafts Memoranda for the City Attorney on assigned cases when requested.
Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a LLB or Juris Doctor Degree form an accredited law school.
Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience practicing law and considerable knowledge of municipal law, contracts, administrative processes and real property.
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
License to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and be in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
