2017 FOIA/COIA Training Seminars
VML held interactive training seminars on the Freedom of Information Act and the Conflict of Interest Act for local officials and employees at two locations – in Richmond on June 14 and in Roanoke on June 15. These seminars offered the perspective of a local government official regarding the Freedom of Information Act as well as an overview of the FOIA changes passed by the General Assembly in 2017. The Conflict of Interest portion of the training consisted of reviewing real-life conflict questions and how to apply the Conflict of Interest Act.
For future training opportunities on FOIA and COIA, review courses available through the VML Leadership Academy.
Conflict of Interests Act training module available
The Virginia Conflict of Interests Act regulates the financial relationship of council members and mayors with their city or town and with any other governmental agency that is related to the city or town. The act is intended to be the one-stop-shopping law for a council member’s financial involvement in dealings with the city or town.
The training module for state officer and employees may be accessed on the Virginia Conflict of Interest and Ethics Advisory Council’s website here.
