Budget cuts forecast; town halls scheduled

The media reports that the budget deal includes cuts of $50 million a year to local governments. We have no details yet on those cuts. We also do not know if the $50 million is a total, or if it comes on top of suggested cuts included in the House or Senate versions of the budget. For example, the House budget proposed to divert $10 million a year in local court clerk fees from local treasuries to the state general fund. That may be a cut that is in addition to the $50 million-we just don’t know yet.

In the meantime, the governor has proposed three additional town hall meetings, in Roanoke, Norfolk and Front Royal. Details follow below. Evidently, 10 town halls in all will be scheduled, so in all likelihood an additional four will be announced either later this week or next week.
